US Participation in ILD during LoI phase

Dear Colleagues,
This E-mail is primarily directed at those at US institutes
interested in working on ILD.
ILD stands for International Large Detector and is based
around the TPC-based tracker and particle-flow based calorimetry concepts
of the GLD and LDC detector concepts.
Apologies if you receive this mail more than once.
It is being sent to those participating in recent ILD meetings, the
LDC and GLD general mailing lists, and the ILD detector optimization
mailing list. It has 3 purposes.
i) Encourage you to participate in the ILD Detector Optimization
Working Group. First meeting is tomorrow (phone meeting)
it is on Indico.
See earlier E-mail sent to lcd-l mailing list.
(If you're not on lcd-l@slac.stanford.edu you should be if based
at a US institute.)
ii) Bring you up to speed on recent developments.
At the recent ALCPG meeting at Fermilab
there were two sessions on ILD (International Large Detector)
the merging LDC/GLD concepts.
There is a call for Letters of Intent (LOIs) to be submitted
by October 1st 2008.
iii) Moving forward with organization and support in the US.
The LDC and GLD Detector outline documents of 2006 were signed by
individuals from 24 US institutions.
DoE and NSF are seeking guidance on how to support the development of
the LoIs. I would very much encourage you to look at Jerry Blazey's talk
(Thursday PM) entitled "News from DOE and NSF".
It also has pointers to the Argonne detector R&D review with statements like
"strengthen US position in development of detector concepts",
"concerned over regional character of concepts" etc.
Broader community comments to gerald.blazey@science.doe.gov are welcomed.
After some discussion it appears that funding mechanisms may be
available for supplementary funding to support the
development of the LoIs. There was a clear statement that
support for each LoI would be considered.
Jim Brau has been charged with compiling advisory material from the LoI
proponents to provide a sense of scope to the funding agencies.
As the US member of the ILD joint steering board, it would be helpful if
you could let me know how you would like to contribute to the ILD LoI
and what resources would be most appropriate.
My sense of things is that the LoI will have a strong emphasis on detector
optimization consisting of both sub-detector conceptual design and
physics studies. The most appropriate type of resource is therefore
physicists with a preference for post-doc level work. There is also a
strong preference for work to be done in an integrated way with existing
international efforts.
From a practical point of view, the main needs of ILD in
the US is to broaden participation and to get organized. Participation in
the ILD detector optimization working group is strongly encouraged.
regards,
Graham Wilson (gwwilson@ku.edu)
